BREAKFAST WAS A QUIET AFFAIR, as it always was—and Seong-Jae wondered that sometimes Malcolm’s apartment felt more like home than his own, in ways that had nothing to do with the fact that his apartment no longer felt safe now that Sila had violated it.

Over cinnamon rolls and Malcolm’s coffee and Seong-Jae’s tea, they said nothing.

And yet nothing was fine, and despite the quiet unrest between them for the past few weeks, the whispered things unsaid…

For these moments, everything felt good again.

Their silence was broken, however, on the drive to work; blocks away from the Central HQ building, the shouts of No justice, no peace! echoed over the streets, louder than they had been just the day before. The crowd of protestors stretched back for several blocks, clustered so thick that as they drew near Malcolm had to slow the Camaro and wait for them to move aside in a gradually parting wave before he could pull into the parking lot.

And as the car passed, people pounded on the hood and the windows, and called them murderers who thought they were above the law.

Malcolm watched with his lips tight, hands hard on the steering wheel as he advanced the Camaro carefully, braking abruptly every few feet if it even looked like a pedestrian might wander into their path.

“There’s more of them every day,” he murmured.

Seong-Jae leaned his elbow against the window, pressing his knuckles against his lips. “They are not wrong.”

“No,” Malcolm said, as a woman shoved a poster board with a printout of Tomasz Kowalczyk’s face on it, bloodied with red marker, in front of the windshield. “They’re not.”
